by RACHEL רחל ALBECK GIDRON אלבק גדרון /Bar Ilan University Press

Leibniz`s theory of the monads is imprinted on Western cultural consciousness as the explicit representative of late 17th-century Baroque philosophy and rationalistic thought. This book sets out to demonstrate a monadic paradigm underlying scientific thought, artistic conceptions, and the poetics of the narrative in 20th-century modernism. The texts, written by Amalia Kahana-Carmon, Hanna Bat-Shahar, Michal Govrin, Ronit Matalon, Dorit Peleg and Rivka Rass, are analysed as texture. The focus moves from the embroiderer, the creator of the world according to the old liturgical text (which serves here as a motto) to the embroideress, who uses the needle as a subversive tool. Jacques Lacan is known not only as a revolutionary and significant psychoanalyst, but also as the most controversial psychoanalyst since Freud. His psychoanalytical theory, founded on the basic Freudian concepts, introduces a new and unique set of ideas as well. Lacan is also innovative in his reading of literature. He read the works of the great authors and merged his literary studies with his analytic experience, developing a unique method of literary criticism. This book presents a Lacanian reading of the poetry of David Avidan and Yona Wallach. Through explanation of the key concepts of Lacan`s theory the author demonstrates Lacan`s special way of reading poetry. This method differs from the traditional psychoanalytical criticism of Lacan`s time and from the familiar tradition of textual criticism. Lacan refused to see in poetry an aesthetic platform for the expression of psychoanalytical ideas but, rather, regarded poetry as a favorable model for learning and understanding psycho

This book focuses on A Comedy of Betrothal (Tzahut Bedihuta DeQiddushin), the earliest known Hebrew play. The study of this Renaissance comedy, dated to the mid-16th century, and attributed to Leone de` Sommi (Yehudah Sommo), a multi-talented Jewish theatre artist presents a new reading that explores the ways in which quotations from Jewish canonical texts are embodied on stage. Such a reading unfolds the possibility for discovering new ways of giving expression to Jewish textual tradition in the theatrical space and in the actor`s bodythus revealing new options, both physical and corporeal, for interpreting the Jewish tradition itself. by P1NI פיני IFERGAN איפרגן /Bar Ilan University Press

This book offers a comprehensive reading of Hegel`s philosophical project, tracing this project from its moment of conception as a critical reaction to Kant`s philosophy, through its first theological formulation, to the discovery of the Idea of Spirit, until its final formulation in the Science of Logic. The manifest target of this comprehensive reading is to establish the claim that Hegel`s fundamental idea is a philosophical attempt that simultaneously diagnoses modern life as tragic while offering a philosophical point of view in order to overcome the tragic nature of this experience of life. How might one think about narrative painting in the present era, in the wake of modernism and post-modernism? What picture-viewer relations does narrative painting postulate in exceeding two-dimensionality towards the domain of the fictional? How can painting, once characterized as a window opening onto fictional reality and redefined by modernism as an opaque window drawing attention to its own material features, be considered narrative? This book address these questions and reconsiders the conceptualization of narrative painting by way of the psychoanalytic thinking of Freud and Lacan as it pertains to the fields of vision and the visual arts. From the series Interpretation and Culture. ספר מרתק זה מציע אופן חשיבה חדש על הציור. בניתוח מע

Baruch Kurzweil as a Commentator on Culture ברוך קורצווייל כפרשן של תרבות
by Moshe Goultschin משה גולצ'ין /Bar Ilan University Press

This study deals with Baruch Kurzweil as a hero of the Hebrew Israeli cultural scene of the 1950s and `60s. Kurzweil`s critical corpus known mainly for his work on S.Y. Agnon`s fiction is treated here not only as literary criticism, but first and foremost as a cultural phenomenon, bearing spiritual and social significance. The book reveals urzweil in the role of cultural agent for German hermeneutics in the tradition of chleiermacher, and for continental aesthetics and protestant theology. Kurzweil aimed to impose European horizons of thought by means of the complex power-knowledge mechanisms proposed by Jean-Franois Lyotard (1924-1998) and Michel Foucault (1926-1984). The book ends with a discussion of the unusual relationship between Kurzweil and his ultimate object of criticism, S.Y. Agnon. This re-examination of urzweil`s famous critical work surprisingly reveals the destructive effect that Agnon`s fiction had on Kurzweil`s critical thought. In conclusion: this book introduces the

In All Your Ways Know Him: The Concept of God and avodah begashmiyut in the Early Stages of Hasidism בכל דרכיך דעהו
by Tsippi Kauffman ציפי קויפמן /Bar Ilan University Press

This book analyses models of avodah be-gashmiyut (i.e., worshiping God through corporeality) in nascent Hasidism: in the thought of the Baal Shem Tov, along with R. Jacob Joseph of Polonnoye, R. Dov Baer, the Maggid of Mezhirech, R. Menahem Nahum of Chernobyl, and R. Ephraim of Sudylkow, in an attempt to determine whether and how avodah be-gashmiyut provides a response to the tension between the halakhic demand for a certain manner of religious conduct, on the one hand, and the immanentistic trends in the Hasidic masters` concept of God, on the other. Part I focuses on an examination of the idea of immanence and the immanent perception of the Godhead in general, in Jewish thought as a whole, and especially, in Hasidism. Part II concentrates on the various expressions of avodah be-gashmiyut. Attention is devoted primarily to the presentation in nascent Hasidism of different models of avodah be-gashmiyut, after introducing its sources within the context of the different interpretations

   Law and Culture משפט ותרבות
by Menacham Mautner מנחם מאוטנר /Bar Ilan University Press

This book sets out to understand the phenomenon of the law by using the concept of culture. It focuses on two major approaches to the interrelationship of law and culture: an approach that sees law as constitutive of culture, and following that as constitutive of the mind categories and practices of human beings; an approach that sees the law created and applied by the courts as a distinct cultural system in the framework of which judges make their decisions. The book opens with two introductory chapters: one that presents the concept of culture and one that presents the major theoretical approaches to the question of the interrelationship of law and culture. The perception that the law made and applied by the courts is a cultural system leads to the insight that luck plays an important role in adjudication. The book offers some suggestions as to how to minimize this role. The book discusses the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer that offers a detailed analysis of the process of meanin
